About the Vault
A library of Irish names, built one name at a time in a studio in Ballintubber, County Mayo.
Where it began
Mayo Calligraphy was founded in 2011 by Maggi Geraghty, who has worked with ink for over 45 years, holds a BA in Art and Design, and is the official calligrapher to Ashford Castle and the calligrapher for the Ireland and UK Micro Business Awards.
The name collection began as a passion project: researching Irish names and their stories in mythology, history and everyday life, and setting each one in Celtic calligraphy. It has grown into the Vault of Irish Names, a library of over 700 names, each with its own text, and it still grows week by week as people ask for the names that matter to them.
The names
The Vault is not limited to names of Gaelic origin. It holds names as they are lived in Ireland: Aoife, Oisín and Saoirse alongside biblical, English, Norse, Norman and modern international names such as Sarah, Amelia, Robert and Taylor. Each one has its own researched story.
The texts
Every name carries a bardic text - a flowing paragraph on where the name comes from, what it means, the historical bearers who carried it and the people who carry it now. The texts are researched and verified against published historical and linguistic sources, among them eDIL, CELT, Ó Corráin and Maguire's Irish Names, Woulfe's Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall and the Dictionary of Irish Biography. A full sourcing audit of the whole collection was completed in July 2026.
Mayo Calligraphy is open about how the texts are made. The Sources page carries the references for every name and a note on the process, including the part played by AI tools in drafting and Maggi's role in shaping, checking and approving each text before it is published.
The calligraphy
Each name is set in the Celtic uncial script tradition, with original knotwork ornament designed by Maggi. The seal at the top of this page carries her own knotwork roundel, drawn by hand and used across the Vault.
Taking a name home
Every name is available two ways. As an instant digital download, a high-resolution 8x10 inch JPEG at EUR 12.99 / USD 14.99 to print at home or at any print shop. Or as a fine art giclee print on textured art paper at EUR 22 / USD 32, printed and shipped from within your own country in the EU, US, UK and Australia, with free shipping and no customs charges.
Beyond the Vault, Mayo Calligraphy also makes made-to-order pieces, including hand-inked originals on genuine goatskin parchment, and takes bespoke commissions for wedding scrolls, memorial pieces, christening certificates and family trees.

If a name is not in the Vault yet, ask for it on the name index page. Requested names go on the research list, and Maggi lets you know when the name is ready.
